Graduate Student Travel Grant

Amount: Up to $2,000 CAD
This grant can be used for travel related expenses such as economy class airfare, accommodation, ground transportation, and conference registration fees.

✅ Eligibility: Full-time graduate students
✅ Purpose: Support graduate students participating in reputable academic conferences, conducting field studies that contribute to future research outcomes, or attending research-related activities.

Graduate Student Research Grant

Duration: Based on the application, up to one year.
Amount: Up to $1,000 CAD
Usage:
✅ Can be used for towards expenditures for research activities such as material purchases, hiring research assistants, etc.
❌ Cannot be used for travel or office equipment. 

 
Application Deadlines

For activities starting between: Applications will be accepted on the following dates:
July 1 and October 31 May 1-31
November 1 and February 28 September 1-30
March 1 and June 30 January 1-31


Each individual is eligible for only one grant within a 12-month period.

 

Terms of Graduate Student Grant

Should an application be approved, the following terms apply.

Graduate Student Travel Grant

• Expenses that will be covered include: (A) Round trip economy airfare, (B) Local transportation and accommodation costs, (C) Visa fees, (D) Registration for the conference, etc.
• A summary report (including travel receipts) following the visit must be submitted to The China Institute within four weeks of the return travel date. The report should provide a brief summary of how the grant was utilized, including key activities and outcomes. Please note that failure to submit a report may affect your eligibility for future grants.
• It is the responsibility of the grant recipients to obtain travel-related insurance for the term of the visit.
• For group proposals, funding will be given to the Faculty to disperse to students, upon receipt of the list of students by The China Institute.
• Unused funds must be returned to The China Institute.
• Approved applicants cannot re-apply before the expiry of the current grant period.

Graduate Student Research Grant  

• Funds can be used towards expenditures for research activities such as material purchases, hiring research assistants, etc. They may not be used for travel unrelated to the project or for office equipment. All expenses must be incurred within the duration of the grant.
• A report (including receipts) of the research must be submitted to The China Institute within four weeks of project completion. The report should provide a brief summary of how the grant was utilized, including key activities and outcomes. Please note that failure to submit a report may affect your eligibility for future grants. 
• It is the responsibility of the researcher to obtain all required ethics approval in advance for research involving human subjects and/or animals.
• Unused funds must be returned to The China Institute.
• Approved applicant cannot re-apply before the expiry of the current grant period.
